A Community Effort to Protect the Coastline

On December 6, Mang Sang Beach in Donghae City became the setting for a meaningful environmental action. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, local citizens and civic groups gathered for a coastal plogging event—a combination of jogging or walking while picking up litter—to protect the natural shoreline.

The event was hosted by the Korea Environmental Protection Movement Headquarters (Donghae Branch) and HWPL Global 06, with support from the Donghae Peace Practice Committee. Approximately 40 participants, including city environmental officials, joined together, demonstrating how community and administration can collaborate for a cleaner, healthier environment.

Cleaning the Beach, One Piece at a Time

Participants walked along the sandy areas and rocky edges of the beach, collecting plastic waste, glass pieces, Styrofoam fragments, and other marine debris.
Though the work was simple, each bag of collected trash represented a shared commitment to preserving the coastline.

The event highlighted the importance of building sustainable habits in everyday life and raising awareness about the growing issue of marine waste.

A Step Toward a Cleaner Donghae

Yoon Sung-gyu, Director of Donghae’s Environmental Department, expressed the city’s appreciation for the joint effort:

“This plogging event reminded us of the value of environmental conservation. We will continue promoting programs that engage our citizens as we work toward a cleaner Donghae.”

The Korea Environmental Protection Movement Headquarters (Donghae Branch) also shared hopes that this activity would inspire continued participation from local residents and strengthen ongoing environmental efforts across the region.

A Small Action, A Meaningful Impact

While the cleanup lasted only a few hours, its significance stretched far beyond the event. It reinforced the idea that when communities come together—citizens, volunteers, and city officials—real change becomes possible.

Mang Sang Beach now reflects a small but powerful example of what shared responsibility and consistent care can create: a coastline that can be enjoyed by everyone and protected for the future.
