Leading by Peace: 20+ South Sudanese Lawmakers Participate in HWPL Peace Leadership Training

Even the most robust laws require wise, peace-minded leaders to bring them to life.

On December 18, 2025, over 20 lawmakers from the Standing Committee for Peace and Reconciliation in South Sudan gathered online for the "South Sudan National Leaders HWPL Peace Leadership Education," hosted via the UNDP conference room.

Centered on the theme "Leaders Who Love the People, Leaders Who Build Peace," the 100-minute session brought parliamentarians together to explore how peaceful values must guide governance and policy implementation.

Key Discussion Points & Parliamentary Commitments

During the in-depth discussions, lawmakers emphasized that institutional frameworks must be matched by a personal commitment to peace and conflict resolution:

• Institutionalizing Peace Expertise: MP Bona Deng Lawrence announced plans to establish a semi-autonomous body under parliament dedicated to research and policy development in conflict resolution, dialogue, and healing.

• Establishing a Peace Academy in Parliament: Recognizing that governance requires ongoing reflection, lawmakers committed to creating a dedicated peace education institution within the legislature.

• Grassroots Constituency Engagement: MP William Onani highlighted the duty of lawmakers to visit local communities directly, spreading peace awareness and mediating regional divisions at the root level.

"Learning is a Lifelong Journey"

Reflecting on the impact of the leadership session, MP Bona Deng Lawrence shared:

"I realized that learning is a lifelong journey. This training provided a fresh perspective on forgiveness and reconciliation. As legislators holding immense responsibility for our people, I will do my utmost to establish a dedicated peace education institution within parliament."
