From Classrooms to Communities: A New Story of Peace in South Asia
The foundation of a peaceful society is often laid not in government halls, but within the walls of a classroom. Between February and March 2026, a meaningful initiative titled "One Student, One Value" reached across borders to touch the lives of students in India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. This campaign, organized by HWPL, marked the 18th anniversary of the UN World Day of Social Justice, proving that the values of empathy and coexistence can be nurtured from a very early age.
Education as a Tool for Social Justice
The UN World Day of Social Justice serves as a global call to action against inequality and discrimination. Aligning with this vision, the "One Student, One Value" campaign was designed to transform classrooms into spaces where every individual feels respected.
Participating schools, ranging from the Shri Ram Global School in India to the Dream Tree International School in Bangladesh and the Afghanistan Girls International Online University, integrated HWPL’s Peace Education textbooks into their curriculum. Students engaged with complex global challenges—such as discrimination and intolerance—not just as theoretical problems, but as issues that can be addressed through practical communication and problem-solving skills.
Turning Individual Values into Collective Art
One of the most engaging aspects of the campaign was its creative approach to learning. Students were encouraged to express their personal understanding of equality and justice through individual peace posters.
These individual efforts were not left in isolation. In a powerful symbolic gesture, the artworks were combined into a single, unified project. This collaborative process mirrored the very essence of the campaign: demonstrating how diverse individual perspectives can come together to form a harmonious and beautiful whole.
Visible Changes: Beyond the Artwork
The true impact of the initiative was most visible in the changing attitudes of the students. Educators at several institutions reported significant shifts in classroom dynamics:
Conflict Resolution: Students who previously relied on arguments began to prioritize empathy and open communication.
Valuing Diversity: Younger children, some as young as seven, expressed profound insights, defining peace simply as "living happily without fighting" and social justice as "being kind and caring."
Teamwork over Competition: A noticeable shift was observed where students moved from wanting to "win" an argument to valuing mutual respect and collective success.
