HWPL Brings Peace to Zambia Through Interfaith Mural Project

Lusaka’s Chibolya Old Mosque reborn as a symbol of peace and harmony

In Zambia’s capital city of Lusaka, a historic mosque has been transformed into a living canvas for peace. Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) announced that from September 11–13, volunteers completed an interfaith mural at the Chibolya Old Mosque, sending a powerful message of unity across religions and generations.

The mural project was part of the opening of the 1st Zambia Peace Assembly, co-hosted by HWPL and its local partner, Family Development Initiatives (FDI), under the theme “Let’s make Zambia a peace-leading nation.”

A Shared Vision for Peace

At the assembly’s opening ceremony, prominent leaders shared their voices for peace, including:

  • Asadullah Mwale, Zambia’s Grand Mufti

  • Sikota Noanga, Senior Religious Officer from the Office of the Vice President

  • Victor Kagoli, Director of Health at Lusaka City Council

Their presence underscored the significance of interfaith cooperation in building social trust.

Youth and Religious Leaders Paint for Harmony

The mural service brought together over 50 participants, including leaders from six different faiths—Islam, Christianity, and others—alongside youth volunteers and local residents.

Together, they covered the mosque’s outer walls with artwork symbolizing:

  • Interreligious harmony

  • Youth participation

  • Community unity

Located in Chibolya, an area often associated with crime and youth drug abuse, the mosque’s transformation carried deep meaning. HWPL explained that the goal was to shift the image of Chibolya from a “symbol of conflict” into a “beacon of peace.”

One volunteer reflected:

“This was more than an art project—it was a chance to build trust between religions and empower young people to take the lead in peacebuilding.”

Building Momentum for National Peace

The Zambia branch of HWPL expressed its determination to use this event as a stepping stone to expand peace efforts nationwide. Plans include strengthening interfaith exchanges, community service initiatives, and youth engagement programs.

In partnership with Lusaka City Council and the National Assembly, HWPL and its partners aim to promote the adoption of a joint peace resolution, further embedding peace as a shared national commitment.
