Bridging Cultures and Building Peace: The Impact of HWPL's Korean-Based Peace Education in Greece

The quest for global peace transcends borders, cultures, and languages. One striking example of this universal pursuit is the successful implementation of HWPL's Korean culture-based peace education in Greece, a nation not currently experiencing war but deeply invested in educating its youth about peace.

The HWPL’s Peace Education embracing Global Culture

Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) emphasizes traditional Korean values, particularly 'Chung (loyalty), Hyo (filial duty), Ye(courtesy),' in its peace education curriculum. While this curriculum is rooted in Korean culture (Confucianism based culture), it also seeks common ground across different cultures to foster a mindset conducive to peace. The program's unique ability to adapt these values to various cultural contexts has garnered international attention and praise.

A Greek Case Study: Resonating with HWPL's Ideals

In Greece, the southernmost country on the Balkan Peninsula, the HWPL's peace education curriculum has been notably influential. Chapter 9 section 1 of the HWPL’s Peace Education Textbook highlights the universal value of respecting and loving parents, transcending time, region, and cultural differences. It teaches the concept of 'Hyo (filial piety),' exemplified through ancient Greek anecdotes and old saying. For example, “Old people’s words are weighted with scales” is a Greek proverb which reflects the importance of honoring elders and parents deeply rooted in Greek culture.

On the Ground: HWPL's Peace Education in Action

The Milion Kalon Neron Secondary School in Greece partnered with HWPL for peace education, led by English teacher Georgia Matena. After being introduced to HWPL's program by a colleague in 2022, Matena, who always aimed to make her students better global citizens, found a perfect match in HWPL's peace education ideals.

In June 2021, Matena began her journey in HWPL's peace educator training. She expressed her commitment to embodying and teaching the values of peace, emphasizing the importance of harmonious coexistence with nature and other people. She highlighted the significance of respecting cultural heritage, believing that understanding and respecting different cultures can prevent wars.

Matena praised HWPL's peace education textbooks for their practicality, intuitiveness, and tailored content for both teachers and students. The materials, rich in color and diverse content, were made accessible for children and adolescents, providing clear guidelines for educators. Furthermore, Matena expressed her profound belief in HWPL's Chairman Man Hee Lee, viewing him as an inspirational and charismatic leader capable of bringing peace to the world. She commended HWPL for its excellent educational resources and readiness to support every step of the educational journey.

The Voice of the Students

The students' responses to the HWPL’s peace education were overwhelmingly positive. Antonella, a student, expressed a newfound recognition of her uniqueness and the importance of surrounding oneself with people who value and positively influence her. Angelos, another student, reflected on the disruption of order and harmony due to greed, highlighting a growing dissatisfaction among people with what they have.
