Should We Destroy Our Nuclear Weapons?
The use of nuclear warheads would be a great tragedy if that happens now and we must take steps now to ensure that time never comes.
It is a threat to Mankind.
Use of nuclear weapons would have a catastrophic effect and destroy everything that comes in its way. No one can forget the Hiroshima-Nagasaki disaster that wiped out almost 90% of the city and caused thousands of innocent people to die because of radiation exposure, the effects of which lingered on for several years after the nuclear bombing.
“Nuclear weapons are unique in their destructive power, in the unspeakable human suffering they cause, in the impossibility of controlling their effects in space and time, and in the threat, they pose to the environment, to future generations, and indeed to the survival of humanity.”
– International Committee of the Red Cross, 2010
It causes Breeds Mistrust and Insecurity.
The nations that possess nuclear weapons have become a reason for global insecurity and mistrust for all the other nations. All the power is concentrated in just a few nations that have these nuclear weapons but the whole world would have to pay for it in case a nuclear war becomes a reality.
There will be Environmental Degradation.
The use of nuclear weapons would be so deadly that it would most definitely result in agricultural collapse and widespread famine. Not just this, the smoke and dust after the nuclear bombing would also affect the temperatures all over the globe and negatively impact the environment for an extended period of time.
People are exposed to Nuclear Terrorism.
There is always a risk of nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands of terrorists as long as nations continue to develop and maintain them. Various extremist groups are always willing to do anything to gain access to these nuclear weapons. All the nuclear arms production sites are on the radars of terrorists and exposed to attacks or thefts. Till the nuclear-armed nations do not destroy their nuclear weapons they continue to put the safety of their citizens in danger at all times.
Nuclear Accidents can happen.
There is a possibility of accidental war in the case of miscommunication, miscalculation, or malfunction of a nuclear weapon. Firing or not firing a missile is usually split-second decisions and if a wrong decision gets made, there is no time to reverse it. Even though the use of nuclear weapons is contrary to the principles of International Humanitarian Law, none of the nations is committed to it even today and so this threat is as real as it can be.
Encourages Proliferation.
Nuclear weapons are equalled with dominance and great power. If the nine nuclear-armed nations do not collectively destroy their nuclear weapons, the rest of the world would also try and acquire these to increase their international status and to protect themselves. This would encourage proliferation to other nations as well and once it begins, there would be no stopping. Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is in existence but despite that, not all the nations are fulfilling their commitments to the treaty. Without substantial progress towards nuclear disarmament, nuclear proliferation remains to be an almost definite possibility.
High Risk in Construction of Nuclear Arsenals.
There is a massive risk that the construction of nuclear arsenals poses on the people involved. The biggest example is the Chernobyl disaster. The people working in such factories for longer durations become vulnerable as they are exposed to radiations for so long. They are at high risks of various life-threatening diseases and deadly infections.
After looking at the dangers that nuclear weapons pose on the world, it is safe to conclude that we will never be completely secure until these nuclear dinosaurs roam the earth. The use of nuclear warheads would be a great tragedy if that happens now and we must take steps now to ensure that time never comes.
DECLARATION OF PEACE and CESSATION OF WAR
Article 2 - War potential |
1. States should co-operate with a view to the gradual global reduction of armament production.
2. States should not produce, assist in, encourage, or induce; the production of weapons of mass destruction, inter alia, chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, or weapons capable of causing indiscriminate or widespread and unnecessary suffering, or weapons incompatible with international humanitarian law.
3. States should take measures to ensure that existing weapons of mass destruction, weapons capable of causing widespread and unnecessary suffering and weapons incompatible with international humanitarian law are gradually dismantled or destroyed. States should cooperate in disarmament and the reduction of arms stockpiles, ideally under international supervision. Decommissioned weapons manufacturing facilities should be repurposed, so that they may serve purposes that are beneficial to humanity in general.
4. States should strive to reduce excessive standing armies and military bases.
5. States should cooperate to gradually diminish trade in weapons and attempt to reduce the flow of small arms to non-state actors.

ReplyDeleteThe inhumane effects of nuclear weapons is until now evident in the communities that has sadly been a victim of it. Millions of dollars that were spent to build these weapons of mass destruction should have just gone to better causes such as addressing poverty and peace education.
