Beyond Faith and Boundaries: Fiji’s Religious Leaders are Building Harmony Through ‘Peace Talanoa’

Have you ever wondered what happens when leaders from completely different faiths sit down to talk—not to debate, but to listen?

On May 27, an extraordinary gathering took place at the Darul Huda Complex in Suva, Fiji. Titled "One Fiji: Peace Talanoa for Harmony and Reconciliation," this event brought together 44 leaders across religious, youth, and educational sectors to break down barriers and foster unity in a multicultural society.

What is 'Talanoa'?

In Fiji and across the Pacific, Talanoa represents a traditional form of inclusive, transparent, and open dialogue. Rather than holding formal negotiations, participants share stories and perspectives without rigid formality.

Applying this rich cultural concept to peacebuilding allowed religious leaders to address community harmony, mutual respect, and social cohesion naturally and authentically.

Unity in Diversity: 4 Major Faiths Speaking as One

Key leaders representing four major religious traditions—Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism—shared their insights on reconciliation based on their respective scriptures:

Hinduism (Pandit Bhuwan Dutt, Arya Samaj): Emphasized community healing through mutual respect.

Christianity (Rev. Anil Reuben, Methodist Church in Fiji & Rotuma): Highlighted forgiveness and dialogue as essential tools for unity.

Islam (Imam Kasim, Fiji Muslim League): Focused on social justice and deep mutual understanding.

Sikhism (Gurdev Kaur, Fiji Sikh Community): Stressed shared moral values beyond ethnic boundaries.

Participants jointly reaffirmed that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but an active process of restoring relationships through forgiveness, justice, and dialogue.

Strong Resonance with HWPL and the DPCW

The highlight of the event was the strong resonance felt toward the peace movement led by HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light).

Participants expressed deep sympathy and agreement with HWPL's flagship initiative, the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)—a comprehensive legal framework designed to prohibit war, resolve conflicts peacefully, and foster a culture of peace globally.

Expressing their gratitude for HWPL’s dedicated efforts to advance international peace, the attending leaders pledged to continue expanding the culture of peace and strengthening ongoing cooperation throughout Fiji.

A Step Forward for Regional and Global Peace

By connecting local Pacific traditions like Talanoa with global peace initiatives like HWPL's DPCW, this event demonstrated how grassroots religious harmony can contribute to international peace.
