Fostering Solidarity Beyond Faith: HWPL Hosts Interfaith Sports Day in Lusaka, Zambia
True and lasting peace within a multicultural society requires converting conceptual dialogue into tangible, shared experiences. In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening social cohesion and interfaith harmony, the Zambia branch of the international peace NGO HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light) hosted the 'Interfaith Sports Day' in the capital city of Lusaka.
Co-organized by HWPL Zambia and local religious and community partners, the event convened approximately 500 participants, including youth, religious leaders, and local residents. The gathering also drew key institutional support, with officials from the Office of the Vice President (Department of National Guidance and Religious Affairs), the Ministry of Youth, and the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) under the Ministry of Home Affairs in attendance.
From Dialogue to Practical Community Action
The Interfaith Sports Day was established as a direct follow-up to the 'Dialogue Through Arts' program held in April 2025. While the previous initiative focused on building mutual understanding through artistic dialogue, this sports event was designed to transition that conceptual consensus into active community participation and collective practice.
To symbolize unity, participants were deliberately integrated into mixed teams—the Blue Team and the White Team—transcending their diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. Together, they competed in various collaborative activities, including relay races, tug-of-war, and football matches, alongside community performances that emphasized team cooperation over individual competition.
Aligning with National Values and Principles
According to the organizers, the event served as a practical application of Zambia’s National Values and Principles (NVP), which strongly advocate for national unity, inclusivity, civic awareness, and peaceful coexistence.
The active participation of religious leaders reinforced this civic responsibility. Addressing the gathered youth, a prominent religious representative highlighted the broader geopolitical significance of the event:
“The national slogan of Zambia, 'One Zambia, One Nation,' truly gains its meaning only when individuals from diverse backgrounds stand together in mutual respect.”
A Sustainable Blueprint for Social Cohesion
The initiative underscores a growing recognition that sports and community-driven activities function as vital mechanisms for conflict resolution and peacebuilding. By gathering government officials, religious authorities, and grassroots citizens in a shared physical space, the event demonstrated how institutional policies can align with community action to foster a culture of respect.
Moving forward, HWPL Zambia announced its commitment to continuously expanding interfaith youth exchanges and peace-centered community activities. Through these sustained local engagements, the organization aims to ensure that youth are equipped to champion harmony and drive positive social cohesion within the nation's governance framework.
