Bridging Peace and Digital Capability: IPYG and NYCOM Launch the 2026 Malawi Youth Empowerment Peace Class

In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the role of youth is shifting from passive participants to active stakeholders in community development and national progress. This transition requires not only a foundational commitment to peace but also the practical skills necessary to navigate modern societal challenges.

On May 27, the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), an affiliate of HWPL, announced a joint initiative with the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) to launch the ‘2026 Malawi Youth Empowerment Peace Class (YEPC)’.

The one-month online program, which commenced on May 28, is specifically structured to cultivate global citizenship and peace leadership among Malawian youth. By providing comprehensive education on future competencies, the initiative aims to foster young leaders capable of contributing directly to local and national development.

Four Pillars of Youth-Led Advancement

To ensure a balanced approach between civic values and practical future skills, the curriculum focuses on four core thematic areas:

  • Understanding Diversity and Peace Values through the exploration of religious and cultural heritage.

  • Defining the Role of Youth and leadership as a living heritage of peace within society.

  • Enhancing AI Utilization Skills and future responsiveness in the digital era.

  • Fostering Global Citizenship to drive local community development.

A Systematic Curriculum: From Heritage to Technical Literacy

The program is organized into weekly modules designed to guide participants through successive stages of identity development, practical training, and leadership application.

Addressing the Digital Divide and Social Conflict

The necessity of this initiative highlights a growing recognition that modern peacebuilding is deeply intertwined with digital literacy and social cohesion. Today’s youth face complex challenges, including widening technological disparities and localized social friction.

An official from the IPYG emphasized the critical background of the program:

"Global youth today face various challenges in a rapidly changing environment, including social conflicts and the digital divide. Through this education, we expect the youth of Malawi to grow into future leaders equipped with the essential capabilities needed in the digital era."

By integrating technical proficiency with ethical leadership, the collaboration ensures that young people are equipped with tangible tools to reduce disparities and spearhead practical solutions within their communities.

A Model for Capability-Based Peacebuilding

The partnership between IPYG and NYCOM demonstrates how international organizations and national youth bodies can collaborate to build sustainable educational infrastructure. It underscores the principle that long-term peace cannot be achieved through conceptual dialogue alone; it requires consistent, localized empowerment and the provision of practical tools.

As the month-long program progresses, the 2026 Malawi YEPC stands as a clear example of how fostering youth capability and digital readiness can strengthen local leadership, build community resilience, and translate the values of peace into measurable, real-world action.
