IWPG Chairwoman Honored with Peace Culture Promotion Award in Mexico
The Women’s Peace Education initiatives of the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) have reached an important milestone in Mexico. On November 21, Jeon Na-Young, Chairwoman of IWPG, was honored with the Peace Culture Promotion Award by Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco (UJAT) during its 67th anniversary ceremony.
Although Chairwoman Jeon could not attend in person, Yoo Min-Sook (Jasmine), Director of International Cooperation at IWPG Global Region 10, received the award on her behalf at the opening ceremony of the 4th Interdisciplinary Congress on Gender Studies and Violence Prevention held at UJAT’s Eduardo Alday Hernández Auditorium.

Recognizing Global Contributions to Peace and Women’s Empowerment
The Peace Culture Promotion Award is presented by UJAT to honor individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to spreading a culture of peace internationally. Previous recipients include Judge María Elósegui of the European Court of Human Rights and Dr. Guadalupe Cano, the first female President of the Tabasco Judiciary.
This year, awardees included Chairwoman Jeon Na-Young, alongside Notary Enma Estela Hernández Domínguez, former UJAT President Cándita Victoria Gil Jiménez, and DACEA faculty member Olga Yerí González López.
Chairwoman Jeon expressed her gratitude through an official statement:
“It is a tremendous honor to receive such a meaningful award. This recognition represents the fruits of IWPG’s peace education and women’s rights initiatives in Mexico and across Latin America. We will continue expanding efforts so that women throughout the region can grow as leaders of peace.”
UJAT Becomes the First Mexican University to Introduce IWPG’s PLTE Program
On the same day, IWPG Global Region 10 and UJAT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation in peace education.
The agreement was signed by Director Yoo Min-Sook and UJAT President Guillermo Narváez Osorio, witnessed by the Women’s Studies Institute and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Through this partnership, UJAT will officially introduce IWPG’s Women’s Peace Education (PLTE) into its undergraduate curriculum—becoming the first university in Mexico to do so.
Launch of UJAT Peace Committee
A UJAT Peace Committee was also inaugurated during the event.
Professor Ivonne Adriana Gaytán Bertruy was appointed as the Committee Chair, with a team of seven members composed of professors, graduate students, and undergraduates.
She shared that:
-
50 students have already completed the PLTE General Course,
-
Peace education materials delivered by Korean instructors are fully adapted in Spanish,
-
And the university plans to expand peace-related activities to all 12 academic divisions.
In a prior interview with Tabasco Radio XETVH 1230AM, she emphasized the goal of expanding PLTE across Latin America through the program’s Spanish-language curriculum.
