Building a Bridge of Peace: IWPG Partners with Colombia for Monument and Global Exchange

A symbol of peace is taking shape in Colombia as the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) Global Region 2 takes bold steps to strengthen international cooperation and spread a culture of peace across South America.

Recently, IWPG representatives met with Colombian government officials , the Vice President of the Valledupar Chamber of Commerce, and leaders from the National University of Colombia through online platform to discuss two key initiatives — the construction of a Peace Monument and expanding global exchanges centered on the upcoming HWPL 9·18 World Peace Summit.

A Monument to Last for Generations

Oscar Cantillo, a public official from Valledupar City, confirmed that the unveiling of the Peace Monument is planned for October 29, 2025. This landmark project, jointly promoted by IWPG and the City of Valledupar, is envisioned as a symbol of South America’s peace culture, uniting local economic and artistic communities in its creation.

Expanding Peace Education and Dialogue

In addition to the monument, discussions also focused on hosting the World Women’s Peace Conference. Beatriz Solano from the La Paz campus of the National University of Colombia announced plans to offer the university’s Bogotá campus as the event venue, with schedules to be finalized through continued collaboration.

Colombia Delegation to Attend the 9·18 World Peace Summit

To strengthen these ties, IWPG Global Region 2 will invite key Colombian leaders to the HWPL 9·18 World Peace Summit in South Korea this September. Invitees include JosĂ© Luis Urón, President of the Valledupar Chamber of Commerce, JosĂ© Romero, Vice President for Peace and Human Rights, and prominent women’s organization leaders.
Global Director Lee Seoyeon expressed hope that the summit would “become a catalyst for expanding international peace exchange between Colombia and Korea.”

Inspiring the Next Generation Through Art

IWPG continues to promote peace culture through initiatives such as the Peace-Loving Drawing Competition, which will be held in Colombia at the end of July. By combining symbolic projects like the Peace Monument with youth-centered peace education, IWPG aims to establish a lasting gateway for peace culture across Colombia and the wider South American region.

The journey from dialogue to tangible action is underway — and with each milestone, the vision of a peaceful South America grows stronger.
