Praying Beyond Borders: HWPL Hosts Interfaith Peace Prayer Gathering in Honor of Patriots
In June, Korea observes "Patriots and Veterans Month" — a time to remember those who gave their lives for the nation. On June 12, 2025, religious leaders and peace advocates gathered in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, to honor that legacy with more than words.
Hosted by the HWPL Global 10 Branch, in partnership with the Korean Seungdan Association, the 1st Interfaith Peace Prayer Gathering brought together over 50 participants from 7 different religious orders. The event served as a space for commemoration, spiritual unity, and a shared call for peace.
A Sacred Gathering for Peace and Remembrance
Held at the picturesque Dungguri Rural Experience Village, the event unfolded in a solemn yet hopeful atmosphere. It included interfaith prayers, moments of silence, remembrance rituals, and the reading of peace messages across traditions.
The message was clear: Peace is not exclusive to any one faith—it is a responsibility we share.
Participants honored the sacrifice of Korea’s fallen heroes while calling for greater interreligious collaboration to pursue sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
Ven. Hyeonsan, president of the Korean Seungdan Association, noted the importance of this initiative:
“This was not just a memorial—it was a meaningful step toward religious unity and peace in action.”
He also highlighted his own peace efforts, including the planting of memorial pines and the operation of a Buddhist martial arts team for veterans.
“I deeply resonate with HWPL’s posture of seeking peace with all religions,” he added.
Expanding the Circle of Peace
While this was the first interfaith prayer of its kind for HWPL Global 10, leaders expressed a strong desire to grow the movement.
Ven. Hyeonsan stated:
“Today we gathered with 7 orders, but I hope next time there will be 10 or even more. I want this to become a truly inclusive peace space.”
The event also included a reflection from Lee Jang-seong, head of the Suwun Church’s Jincheon Branch, who connected the spirit of peace to national values:
“True peace is what those we honor today dreamed of. Let us inherit their legacy and build a united, prosperous Korea.”
When Faith Becomes a Bridge
The prayer gathering showed that even in times of remembrance, religion can be a force of reconciliation—not division. It reminded all who were present that faith communities have a vital role to play in healing history, building unity, and preparing a peaceful tomorrow.
A representative from HWPL Global 10 Branch remarked:
“This was a chance to live out the universal values of peace. We hope events like this help all citizens see peace and reunification as part of their personal mission.”
From solemn prayers to shared determination, the first Interfaith Peace Prayer Gathering was not just a ceremony — it was the beginning of a shared journey.
