HWPL Peace Education: Empowering Peacebuilders in Cambodia
In Cambodia, where the echoes of history are shaping a brighter future, HWPL’s Peace Education is transforming students and educators alike. At Prek Leap High School, teacher Makara Khim is leveraging this transformative curriculum to instill values of understanding, forgiveness, and sacrifice, shaping the next generation of peacebuilders.
Introducing Peace Education
Makara Khim, a dedicated school
administrator, first encountered HWPL’s Peace Education in April 2024 through
the Cambodia Education Advancement Program (KAPE). Inspired by its vision, he
participated in the Peace Teacher Training program, gaining a profound
appreciation for the role of education in fostering peace.
Using HWPL’s curriculum, Makara teaches
lessons like “Understanding and Forgiveness” to help students consider the
intentions behind others' actions. “Before judging others, I encourage students
to reflect on why people act the way they do,” he shared.
A Ripple Effect of Change
Makara has witnessed significant changes in
his students. Through role-playing and interactive discussions, they’ve
developed greater empathy, better communication skills, and a deeper commitment
to peace. “I’ve seen students transform their attitudes and build stronger
relationships, not only with their peers but also within their communities,” he
said.
This transformation extends to educators as well. Makara noted that the training has helped him and his colleagues understand the value of sacrifice and forgiveness, empowering them to lead by example. “Teachers who embrace peace can inspire students to become global citizens dedicated to harmony,” he explained.
The Power of HWPL’s Curriculum
Makara believes HWPL’s Peace Education
curriculum provides a structured yet flexible framework for guiding
participants from inner peace to external harmony. He highlighted the lessons
on “Sacrifice Without Reward” and “Forgiveness” as particularly impactful for
fostering peaceful communities.
“Through these lessons, we’ve learned to create harmony in classrooms and beyond,” he shared. He emphasized the importance of hands-on activities and role-playing to maximize the effectiveness of peace education, especially in interactive and in-person settings.
A Vision for Global Peace Education
Makara’s goals go beyond the classroom. He
envisions building a strong team to expand peace education, train more
educators, and increase awareness of its importance both locally and
internationally.
“Peace education has the power to change the world,” Makara said. “By inspiring changes in attitudes and behaviors, we can bring about lasting peace in families, communities, and nations.”
Cambodia’s Commitment to Peace
Cambodia has made significant strides in
incorporating peace education, with HWPL playing a central role. The
establishment of the HWPL Peace Education Committee during the 30th World Peace
Tour in 2019 marked a turning point. Over 20 schools signed MOUs with HWPL,
committing to spreading peace education.
With dedicated educators like Makara leading
the way, Cambodia continues to inspire hope for a more peaceful future, proving
that education is the cornerstone of change.
Join the Movement
HWPL’s Peace Education is not just a program;
it’s a movement to empower individuals to create harmony in their communities
and beyond. Let’s support educators like Makara and HWPL’s mission to build a
world where peace is a shared reality.
