HWPL Peace Education: Transforming Lives in Romania
In the heart of Romania, an inspiring movement is taking root in classrooms as HWPL’s Peace Education reshapes how young minds perceive and practice peace. From teaching six-year-olds to transforming entire communities, this initiative is leaving a lasting impact on students, educators, and families.
Empowering Young Learners with Peace
Aurora Simona Spirescu, a seasoned teacher
with 28 years of experience, first encountered HWPL’s Peace Education in
December 2020 through a colleague. After receiving training in February 2021,
she implemented the 12-lesson peace curriculum with her first-grade students at
Ferdinand I Elementary School in Bucharest.
Now in third grade, her students continue to
embrace the principles of peace, integrating them into their daily lives. “The
children have become more mindful of their actions and prioritize peaceful
interactions in their relationships,” Spirescu shared, reflecting on the
transformation she has witnessed.
Innovative Approaches to Learning
To ensure that peace concepts resonate with
her young students, Spirescu tailored HWPL’s curriculum using age-appropriate
activities such as games, stories, and short films. These creative methods
captured the children’s interest, making complex ideas like kindness, courage,
and gratitude relatable and actionable.
One standout project this year focused on
weekly themes, including gratitude, kindness, and courage. Students practiced
these concepts at home and school, then shared their experiences with their
classmates. “This project not only strengthened their sense of responsibility
but also fostered greater unity within the class,” Spirescu explained.
Peace Beyond the Classroom
Spirescu’s efforts extend beyond her
classroom. As a role model for her students, she strives to embody the values
she teaches, emphasizing calmness, honesty, and patience. “Teaching peace has
brought positive changes to my own life, making me more aware of my words and
actions,” she said.
Her students are also taking peace into their
communities. By practicing what they’ve learned at home and sharing these
lessons with family members, they are helping to create a ripple effect of
harmony and understanding.
A Vision for the Future
Spirescu’s dedication to peace education
underscores its critical role in building cohesive, compassionate communities.
“When you understand the importance of peace, you naturally want to share it
with the world,” she said.
Looking ahead, she plans to continue
integrating new projects into her curriculum, helping students cultivate
empathy and unity. This year, her class is preparing a year-end event to
showcase what they’ve learned, including five skits centered on peace concepts.
The Foundation of Romania’s Peace
Movement
Romania’s journey with HWPL’s Peace Education
began in April 2019 during the 31st World Peace Tour. A conference in Bucharest
highlighted the role of educators in promoting peace and paved the way for
local institutions to adopt HWPL’s curriculum.
Since then, schools like Mihai Viteazul
National College have fully embraced the program, with educators praising its
clarity and effectiveness. Today, peace education in Romania is not just an
initiative but a growing movement that sets an example for Europe and beyond.
