Democratic Republic of the Congo, Its Effort to Empower Peace through Education

In the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a nation marred by decades of internal strife and ethnic conflicts, hope is budding through the introduction of peace education. For too long, the DRC has borne the brunt of violent civil wars, resulting in millions of casualties and a staggering refugee crisis. However, amidst these challenges, the desire for peace resonates fervently within its people.

The implementation of HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light) peace education is heralding a new dawn for the DRC. With partnerships established with numerous educational institutions and organizations across the nation, including the Menomate Fourth Brother School and the ITP Batela School, HWPL's peace education initiative is gaining traction.

During the culmination ceremony of an online peace teacher training program held at the Bukavu Institute of Higher Education Research on May 6, 2022, educators unanimously voiced their belief in the transformative power of peace education. Esther Bohauzima, a faculty member at Bukavu Public University, emphasized the importance of instilling the concept of 'order' as the foundation of peace among students. She highlighted that adherence to laws and principles fosters harmony and prevents conflicts, underscoring the significance of considering others' well-being over selfish interests.

Echoing similar sentiments, Erich Batumike Banyanga, a history teacher at Bukavu ISP University, attributed the roots of war and conflict to 'greed,' emphasizing the pivotal role of 'love and respect' in building peace. Recognizing the importance of 'sacrifice' in peacebuilding, he urged students to embrace voluntary sacrifice as a means to achieve lasting peace.

Moreover, the testimonials of Marcel Matavisi Muhula, an English teacher at Mwamalaya Bien Secondary School, and Sinésha Valum, a student at Pehé Antoine Manzotti School, underscore the profound impact of HWPL’s peace education. Marcel attested to the psychological transformation he experienced through the training, fueling his motivation to contribute positively to his community. Sinésha acknowledged the value of cooperation and mutual respect in achieving peace, reflecting on the realization that acknowledging one's own worth is pivotal to respecting others.

In a country like the DRC, where conflict has ravaged communities for decades, peace education emerges as a guide for hope. By nurturing a generation of peace-conscious individuals who prioritize empathy, cooperation, and sacrifice, peace education paves the way for a brighter and more harmonious future. As we stand at the precipice of change, let us rally behind the cause of peace education, for in its embrace lies the promise of a peaceful and prosperous tomorrow for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
