Fostering HWPL’s Peace Education in Burundi

Peace education stands as a pivotal endeavor among HWPL's core initiatives, emphasizing the importance of instilling the values of peace as an enduring legacy for future generations. Through the development of peace education curricula, the training of educators, and the establishment of peace classes, HWPL is dedicated to nurturing peace-oriented citizens globally. Burundi, a nation with a history marred by conflict and internal strife, is walking together with HWPL to raise peace messengers through HWPL’s peace education.

 Purpose and Achievements of HWPL’s Peace Education

HWPL's peace education is driven by the vision to bequeath the values of peace to future generations. By developing a comprehensive peace education curriculum, training teachers, and implementing peace classes, HWPL aims to contribute significantly to the cultivation of peace-loving citizens worldwide. The tangible realization of these efforts is evident in the widespread adoption of peace education across the globe, aligning with the 10 articles of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), particularly Article 10 on the "Spread of a Culture of Peace."

Burundi’s support for HWPL

In Burundi, a nation grappling with the aftermath of prolonged conflicts and civil unrest, educational institutions have shown unwavering support for HWPL's peace education. Prominent figures, such as Domitien Ndayizeye, former President of Burundi, have attended HWPL events and asked for public support on HWPL, emphasizing the need to unite efforts to find ways to prevent wars.  

MOUs, Peace Teachers, and Education Status in Burundi

Hatungimana Ribone, a teacher at Chasi Public Junior High School, played pivotal role in facilitating MOUs between four schools in Burundi and HWPL showcases the dedication of local educators to the cause of peace. Since the commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the Peace Summit in Burundi, four schools, including Angels' School, Leobos Junior High School, Chasi Public Junior High School, and Le Dufinno School, have signed MOUs with HWPL. Six peace teachers have been appointed, and a total of 66 sessions of HWPL peace education have been conducted across these institutions.

Actual Practice of Peace Education in Burundi

Ribone, the dedicated teacher from Chasi Public Junior High School, emphasizes that HWPL peace education teaches individuals to understand and forgive one another. He defines peace as the harmonious relationship with others and the end of conflicts between races. Ribone, impressed by HWPL's humility in communication, expresses trust in the organization's potential to operate globally. The impact of HWPL's peace education on students in Burundi is evident through their reflections on specific lessons. For instance, during a lesson based on Chapter 1 of HWPL’s Peace Education Textbook which focuses on cooperation and coexistence, students acknowledged the possibility of creating a better world through collaboration. Another lesson which dealt the Chapter 3, focusing on the causes of the breakdown of peace in the global community, led students to recognize the pivotal role of love in achieving a peaceful world.

 

HWPL's peace education emerges as a transformative force in Burundi, fostering a new generation of peace-conscious individuals. Through the dedication of local figures like Hatungimana Ribone and the enthusiastic response from students, HWPL's vision for a world united in sustainable peace takes root in the heart of a nation where frequently seeing  civil wars and conflicts. As these seeds of peace continue to grow, Burundi serves as a testament to the potential of education as a catalyst for positive change.
