A Tool for Spreading the Culture of Peace: 'HWPL Peace Textbook'

Anyone can dream of making culture of peace as a legacy to future generation and establish a peaceful world. However, without knowing how to establish sustainable peace, peace remains merely a distant story and unattainable dream. In other word, if there is a clear understanding of peace, how to achieve it, and actual cases where peace has been realized, peace becomes a tangible reality. This is the very reason why HWPL conduct peace education to young generation. HWPL has proposed peace education as a way to leave a legacy of a beautiful world of peace for future generations.

In order to transfor the future of global society into a better world, it is very important to raise the next generations as citizens of peace. For such future leaders to emerge, it is essential that schools instill education that teaches young generation about peaceful attitudes, values, and experiences so that students can go out into society and put them into practice.

HWPL’s peace education provides examples of achieving peace and textbooks to teach peace. HWPL’s Peace Education consists of 12 lessons. Lesson 1~4 cover the meaning and value of peace, Lesson 5~12 introduce qualities to become a peace citizen. The main content of Lesson 1~4 delves into the principles of peace necessary for humanity such as harmony, balance, cooperation, and mutual existence. These lessons help students to define the answers to life and peace that human being has been seeking for. Lesson5~12 focuses on importance of peace through historical events and recent cases that are related to war and peace. Moreover, these lessons suggest various methods for peaceful coexistence with others and how to peacefully resolve conflicts.

Already schools and teachers from 78 countries have implemented peace education and peace education has been bringing positive effects on young generation. This education contributed students in different aspects including emotional stability, improvements on self-esteem, enhancement of interpersonal relationships, resolving family issues, and reduction of school violence. Furthermore, it is expected that youth crime rates will decrease with the spread of peace education.

Then one may question how to introduce HWPL peace education. Education institutions hoping to implement peace education can sign an MOU with HWPL. Under this MOU, HWPL shares peace education textbooks and actual class cases done in different countries and an institution can freely plan and operate classes using the HWPL peace education textbooks. Teachers can develop and use teaching materials and method autonomously to reflect their local environment. Also, there is a network for peace teachers to share class materials and results which contributes to the development of their teaching.

Any teacher, both current or former teachers, or someone in the education field can become a peace teacher. HWPL grants teaching qualification to those who have completed peace teaching training. Upon completion of training course, HWPL appoints trainee as “HWPL Peace Teachers.” HWPL Peace teachers qualify to participate in online and offline international peace education workshops and conferences which promotes peace teachers to be competent with flow of world peace.
