The Power of Handwritten Letter

Nowadays, it is so easy to communicate with others using text messages and messengers. However, as every coin has two sides, there are pros and cons to this as well. The easier we can send messages to others, the lighter the message is.

Have you ever written a letter to deliver what is deep in your heart to someone else? I believe that everyone has their own experience of writing a letter to deliver one’s genuine heart to a special person. For me, writing a letter is a method I use to deliver my heart to someone in a special way. For every step I take to write a letter, from selecting the letter paper to the way I write the letter, I put my heart into it.

What is ironic about living in an era where there are various communication method is that we use traditional ways of communicating, such as letters, to put weight on our message. When was the last time you receive a handwritten letter in your mailbox? The “rareness” of handwritten letters is what makes it so valuable. Actually, just last week, I received a postcard from a person I got to know from visiting her blog. I felt so touched by her handwritten postcard especially because I don’t get a handwritten letter even from my close friends! I could feel her sincere heart from the postcard.

World Peace. Sounds so grandiose. Does a person like me have any influence over making world peace? It seems like world peace is something that presidents or ministers should do, not a citizen like me. Even if I desperately hope for peace, I don’t think there is anything I can do to make a change. This is actually what I used to think. However, I realized that my small action may dedicate to world peace, just like small drops making a shower. Though the weight of the letter may be very light, the message delivered may weigh like an elephant.

Democracy is where the people are the nation. If no citizen, there is no nation. This means that each citizen has great power. Thus, it is very meaningful to raise your voice for the peace of your society, nation, and even for the world. Chairman Manhee Lee of HWPL is well aware of the importance of citizens in realizing world peace. Thus Chairman Lee and HWPL encourage the participation of citizens in peace work. The peace letter campaign is one of the peace activities that citizens can participate. It is a campaign to write a letter to the leaders of nations urging them to support world peace. The main purpose of this campaign is to ask leaders of nations to support the ‘Declaration of Peace and Cessation World (DPCW)’, the answer to realizing true world peace. We the citizens elected the representative of a nation to govern a country on behalf of individual citizens. And peace letter conveys a message asking a nation’s leaders to deliver citizens’ hope for world peace in a global society.

Already 564,445 citizens send out peace letters to leaders of 192 countries on and offline. The peace letter contains three important messages.

- Cooperating to make DPCW, the answer to end the war, as the UN resolution.
- Giving support to DPCW so that it can be established as international law.
- Asking leaders to reply back to peace letters.

Do you want to be the master of your country? Then you should be able to raise your own voice to the leaders of your country who represents you. Do you think that there is no power to a piece of letter you write? Try to remember the time you receive a letter in your mailbox. Even if it was a simple letter, it probably moved your heart in some way. Letters have the power to touch one’s heart. If you are a citizen of a democracy, you should become a person with the courage to voice out! I recommend you to deliver your heart for peace using a peace letter. Your small effort may change the world.
