Peace Work Organized by Living Proof of Korean War, Chairman Man Hee Lee

For my bachelor, I studied international studies which cover different topics and issues around the world. It included international economics, business, laws, politics, and even world history. Due to the characteristics of my major, I was very interested in international organizations and NGOs.

There are millions of Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating to address a social or political issue. Among many, there is one organization that I am especially interested in. It is Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL).

HWPL is an international peace NGO advocating global peace and cessation of war. In 2013, HWPL was registered as an NGO with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and it proclaimed the Declaration of World Peace. Chairman of HWPL, Man Hee Lee was born in 1931 and a living witness of the Korean War.

While serving in the Korean army, he saw with his eyes the ruthless death of his fellow associates. He testifies that more people died from hunger than the threat weapons. I am not a person who experienced actual war in my life. Thus, when Chairman Man Hee Lee testified about his experience of the Korean War, it awakened me. I never imagined that people died from hunger during the war. I thought that people died due to attacks from the enemy. I believe that such testimony is only possible because that person physically experienced the war. Fact that Chairman Lee physically experienced the war at a young age, his dedication to achieving world peace is far from superficial. He truly knows the dark side of the war and that it should never happen anywhere and to anyone.

Chairman Lee and HWPL have been walking on a path to achieve sustainable world peace. On March 14th, 2016, HWPL proclaimed the Declaration of World Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) which “embodies the principles and measures for preventing and resolving conflicts and sustaining a peaceful global society.” It is a declaration that is a legal solution that promotes the global community to work together to secure peace and protect daily lives of people around the world.

Ever since 2016, Chairman Man Hee Lee and HWPL are actively working with governments and international organizations to introduce DPCW as an international law.
