[Interview] 525 Peace Walk Campaign from Citizen’s Eyes

 Interview

On May 25th, there was '6th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace and the Peacewalk'. It was a marvellous and peaceful event. There were some walk-in interviews in South Korea. I would like to put that interview video onto you in English. Watch out the video, please.

Here is the interview script.

Q1. What made you join the walk?

Interviewee A :
2-3 years ago, one of my friends who participated in the peace campaign introduced me to it.

Interviewee B :
My grandfather was a Korean War veteran so I had heard a lot about the cruelty of war from him
I heard how cruel and awful the war was. My hope was for an imminent world of peace,
which is why I participated in today’s walk.

Q2. What is ‘Peace’ to you?

Interviewee A :
A happy family

Interviewee B :
If I can express peace in 5 words, I’d say ‘Walking hand-in-hand together’.

Q3. Please tell me how you feel about the event.

Interviewee A :
I thought peace was only uttered with one’s lips, but I realized today that we could make it happen with our own hands, after watching, listening to and feeling this campaign.

Interviewee B :
First of all, I’m very moved and surprised to see so many of Busan’s citizens participating in today’s event. When I was a student, we always sang a song called ‘Our wish for reunification’.
I recall my teacher praising our voices, so I think the reunification of the Korean peninsula will truly come soon.

Q4. Do you have a question for the President?

Interviewee A :
Mr. President, I believe that you already know how much our Korean nation has suffered from war.
I hope that no one will have to suffer again from the war that makes people aim their guns and knives at one another to kill.
How joyful would it be if we left a peaceful world without war as a legacy to our children? We need your support.

Interviewee B :
President Moon Jae-In, let me tell you this. I have heard that hand-written Peace Letters were sent to world leaders everywhere on March 14th. I believe that this letter was also sent to President Moon Jae-In and I heard that it contains the will of the people for world peace. Please read this letter and reply to the will of the people with a sincere heart. My hope is for Korea to become a country where a peaceful world begins. It would be incredible to see the President of Korea and the Korean people joining in as one for this precious history.

Q5. How did you find participating as a staff member in today’s event?

Interviewee :
It was amazing to see so many people working together in perfect harmony. I hope this event achieves great results.

[From the Youth To our Dear President]

Q6. Do you have anything to say to the President on behalf of the youth?

Interviewee :
It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Jonghwa Lee, manager of IPYG’s Busan-Gyungnam Eastern branch.
Mr. President, if war breaks out, all our youth will have their lives robbed from them without having had the opportunity to blossom. Therefore, we - the youth - participated in the event to support the DPCW with hearts desperate to achieve peaceful re-unification and world peace.
Moreover, we have written a Peace Letter to our President to request his support for the DPCW. We would be very grateful if you would reply to our letter.
Youth, who are the future of Korea, will achieve peace! Let’s strive for peace!

  1. Beautiful post. We must urge all 193 world leaders to enact the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) at the United Nations this year.
